ITP Team Exceeds Goals for 2004
It takes a lot of hard work to be an endurance athlete – and sometimes, even after the countless hours spent training and after doing your best, you still sometimes fall short of your goal. But the dedicated men and women who make up the ITP Team can rest easy knowing that in one very important area they have definitely met – and passed – the mark that they set: raising money to help kids with ITP.
When the Board of Directors of the ITP Foundation devised the budget for 2004, they crossed their fingers and hoped that the ITP Team members would be able to raise $25,000. That’s a lot of money, especially when ITP Team members are working as private individuals to get sponsorships.
But when the books are closed on 2004, the ITP Team will have raised a total of $40,861, exceeding the budgeted figure by $15,861, or more than 63%!
Marathon runner Marilyn Hart joined the ITP Team in 2004 and attracted attention to ITP by running in the famous New York City Marathon on November 7, 2004. The event, which drew 36,562 participants in 2004, features a 26.2-mile course that starts at the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Staten Island and winds through all five boroughs of New York City before finishing at Tavern-on-the-Green Restaurant in Central Park. Held this year on a warm, very sunny day, the Marathon allowed Marilyn a chance to test her endurance while raising funds for and awareness of ITP.
"This was my third New York City Marathon, having competed in 2003 and 1998" says Marilyn, who has been running for more than 20 years and also lists biking and tennis as among her athletic activities. "This year was my best time, at 4:04:41 - not quite my goal of 4:00:00, but close."
A native of Darien, CT, Marilyn says she became involved with the ITP Team because of her friendship with ITP Foundation founders Michael and Maja McGuire. "They have shared their and their child's experiences with ITP with us, and this seemed like a good way to help." Marilyn's efforts raised several thousand dollars. "I sent an e-mail the week of the Marathon," Marilyn explains, "and people responded quickly."

January - National Blood Donor Month!
January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month, and the ITP Foundation encourages all eligible individuals to make a special effort to give blood during this time.
The theme for this year's campaign is "Give Blood…The Gift of Life" and it highlights the importance of giving the gift of life through the donation of blood.
“Nine out of ten people will need blood at some time in their lives,” says Michael E. McGuire, Chair of the ITP Foundation. “That includes people with ITP, many of whom receive regular intravenous immunoglobulin treatments, which are derived from blood plasma.”
