Information for Volunteers

As a non-profit organization, the ITP Foundation uses its resources in the most advantageous manner possible.  One way that we are able to increase our effectiveness is through the kindness and generosity of those who volunteer their time and talents to help us fight this serious bleeding disorder.

The ITP Foundation seeks volunteers in a number of different areas:

ITP Team

Endurance athletes of all levels are invited to join the ITP Team to help raise awareness of ITP and funds for the ITP Foundation’s battle against this serious bleeding disorder.  Whether you are just running your first marathon or have a dozen triathlon wins under your belt, there’s a place for you on our team.

And what if you are too busy to participate or just not athletically inclined?  You can still help – by sponsoring a team member or helping to round up other sponsors.

Outreach - Help us spread the word about ITP

Raising awareness of ITP is one of the ITP Foundation’s primary goals – and ANYONE can help us in our efforts.

Are you a person with ITP or the parent of a child with ITP?
Contacting us and letting us know about your experiences with ITP is vitally important.  If you are willing to speak to a reporter or to share your story, you may be able to help other families learn more about how to deal with ITP.  Even if you are not willing to “go public,” just staying in contact with the ITP Foundation helps us obtain a better, fuller picture of the needs of the ITP community.

Are you a medical professional?
If you have had experience treating individuals with ITP, you can be a great resource to have on file when reporters call with questions.  We also can use your expertise in determining what new information about ITP would be valuable for patients, parents and other medical professionals to know and in building our contact list of medical professionals with ITP experience.

Are you a media professional?
Media professionals willing to donate their time and expertise can provide enormous help in spreading awareness about ITP and about the work that the Foundation is doing.

Are you someone with experience communicating with government officials?
Because ITP is classified as a rare disease, it has a very low awareness rating among many government officials.  If you are comfortable communicating with government officials on any or all levels, you can make a difference in championing the cause of children with ITP among those who are in a position to make important, positive decisions concerning ITP.

Are you just an average person with a good heart and a willingness to help?
Even someone with no outreach experience can be a valuable ally – by writing letters to the editor of your local newspaper, making us aware of stories about ITP that have run on your local newscast, offering to hand out literature about  ITP, etc.

Administrative
Are you willing to spend a few hours stuffing envelopes, inputting data, updating mailing lists or helping with correspondence and filing?  The ITP Foundation can always use people who are willing to help out with the nuts and bolts involved with running an organization.

Interns
The Foundation is also eager to work with students who would like to work on a regular basis with the Foundation as an intern.  All interns are expected to assist with administrative tasks, but we also appreciate those interested in specializing in other areas (fund raising, outreach, etc.)

Fundraising
All of the good work that the ITP Foundation does, from funding medical research to assisting families affected by ITP to informing the public about the disorder, requires a substantial amount of money.  Any individual who wishes to assist in fund raising – whether through helping out with grant proposals, building up direct mail lists, planning special events, requesting donation items for fund raising auctions or in any other way – is always welcome.

ITP Foundation Branch Leaders
A long term goal of the ITP Foundation is to establish branches of the Foundation across the country.  This would enable the Foundation to be more reactive to specific regional needs; to recruit and assist local ITP Team members; and to more effectively spread awareness, offer help and raise funds.  Starting these branches on any level requires significant volunteer efforts; if you are willing to spearhead such an effort or be part of a leadership team in your area, the Foundation would be delighted to speak with you.
